Yes, it may sound basic at first. But, what Cheryl Ferguson says about the importance of basic pleasantries for job candidates, is very complex.

Did your mother ever tell you to sit up straight, get your elbows off the table, or watch your language? She did it for a reason. She knew that other people judge us by our behavior. Unsuspecting candidates step in this minefield all the time, blowing their chance for an invitation to join a company.

Cheryl’s most important bit of knowledge, “She knew that other people judge us by our behavior“. It is a simple, yet complex, statement. So, how do I behave to give off a good impression? How do I leave an impression that I am hardworking, resourceful, and intelligent? Just coming out and saying, ‘I have a high IQ and will work long hours’ will NOT benefit you. That action will come off as crass, and will definitely work against you if you are trying to leave a good impression.

You need to do it in a subtle way. Making a quick reference to a successful hiring practice the company has developed, or referencing knowledge about the company that could only be learned through thorough investigation. These are two subtle ways to give your interviewers the perception that you are resourceful and can get things done. That you are someone they can work with. Do your homework and use this information to your favor.

Perception is reality. And, how we behave will affect the interviewer’s perception of our abilities, intellect, and usefulness. Use this chance to leave a great impression wisely, and you will increase your chance of success.
